	SUSTAINABILITY AS A MINDSET

Sustainability is an important aspect in our lives. We live consciously by having a small home, consuming and wasting little, buying second hand, renovating in an environmentally-friendly way, eating vegan, growing our own vegetables, shopping local and seasonal, etc. We uphold these same values in our professional life.

As book designers, our impact can be reduced by designing thoughtfully, choosing appropriate materials, using the right production method for each individual project and working with like-minded suppliers. A beautiful and well-made book is one you want to hold lovingly, read multiple times, and cherish for a long while. We’re here to help (self-)publishers with every step in this process.

Additionally, our shared office space Howdy is an accumulation of our growing interest in bio-ecological renovation, the knowledge we acquired through years of research (especially thanks to the extensive database of our local supplier Ecomat) and a strong DIY ethos. Our aim is to show people the possibilities of an eco-friendly and sustainable renovation. Not only did we use a wide variety of ecological, healthy materials, the interior is almost completely made up of second-hand furniture and appliances. 


In this case study we will give some examples of recent work where sustainable choices were at the forefront.

	STEDENBOUW KAN OOK ZO (loosely translated: Urban planning can also be approached like this) features useful tips and 57 projects that offer an alternative and future-proof approach to urban planning. It was crowdfunded, making it easier to calculate the amount of books that needed to be printed, and co-created by civil society organisations, authors, experts, engineering offices and municipalities. A true collaborative effort! 

We used a space-efficient design by laying out the subchapters continuously and avoiding unnecessary blank pages. The PMS colour was used to separate the informational texts from the project texts. We avoided bleeding images off the pages in order to have as little printed paper waste as possible: this requires less energy to recycle. The inside pages of the book were printed on Cyclus Offset 115gr&#38;nbsp;(100% post-consumer recycled*, certifications: Blue Angel, EU-Ecolabel, Cradle to Cradle Certified®, ISO 14001, FSC® 100% Recycled, Nordic Swan – features: process chlorine free) in offset (CMYK with 1 PMS). 

The softcover with flaps was printed in offset (1 PMS) on Muskat Brown 290gr (100% recycled – certifications: FSC® Recycled). We chose this material because its natural look and feel are a good match with the subject matter and with the interior paper. 


Stedenbouw kan ook zo was expertly edited by Eva Heuts of VIBE vzw, Erik Grietens of Bond Beter Leefmilieu and Joeri De Bruyn of the publisher Public Space. It was printed by Die Keure, world-renowned for its qualitative and sustainable printing.


	WILDER KOKEN (loosely translated as Cooking wilder) is the first book in a series on how to forage and cook like a pro, self-published by herbalist and chef Natalie Schrauwen, a.k.a. ELDER. Volume I – Lentekruiden (Spring herbs) features 24 recognisable wild spring plants with vibrant pictures, yummy recipes and a whole lot of practical info. 
The interior pages are printed in offset (CMYK) on Nautilus Classic White 100gr (100% post-consumer recycled – certifications: Blue Angel, EU-Ecolabel, Cradle to Cradle Certified®, ISO 14001, FSC® 100% Recycled – features: process chlorine free). The sewing was done with an innovative multicolour thread, which makes each centre section and each book unique.
Some printers or clients might be hesitant about printing on the slightly grey, uncoated and clearly recycled Nautilus. We worked together brilliantly with L.capitan by brightening the photo files and adjusting the presses, and are very happy with the results. The photographs came out in stunning yet natural colours.&#38;nbsp;
The book was quarter bound by Brepols with a lavender-coloured Wicotex Brillianta linen (dyed woven viscose cloth which is laminated to acid-free lining paper). It is REACH compliant (a regulation of the EU that protects human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals) and vegan. The greyboard for the hardcover is left exposed (without a covering material such as linen or paper), minimizing the amount of materials, glues and processes used. The front cover and spine are foil stamped instead of printed.

	PAMUK is a four-season visual notebook by photographer Jean-Luc Feixa. His eponymous cat leads the way in his new house. Whether she is enjoying a gentle ray of sunshine, hunting on the emerald green tiles or lounging in a sky full of stars, she shows off her grey coat with ease through every corner of this new universe. 
Feixa usually takes analogue, grainy and black-and-white photographs, but for this series he used a digital camera. The four-colour photographs stand out from his portfolio, so when he approached us to make a book, we wanted to incorporate some of the analogue aesthetic. We immediately thought of RISO printing, a technique that we have also used in our own work. 
A risograph printer is a machine that prints copies of digital files, using automated techniques of screenprinting and mimeograph, merging the digital with the analogue. The machine prints one or two colours at a time. They use 75–95% less energy than regular photocopiers (depending on the model), the inks are made from rice bran (a raw waste material), the ink cartridges are recycled and the master sheets use rice paper (a biodegradable material). Unlike toner-based printers, RISO machines don’t emit greenhouse gases or VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).
Nina Serebrenick of Studio Boekenberg meticulously printed the four sections of this book with four different colour combinations. This gives each chapter its own feel. The colour combinations are shown on the chapter openers: winter (metallic gold, bright red, blue and black), spring (aqua, yellow, black and fluorescent pink), summer (yellow, fluorescent orange, blue and black) and fall (metallic gold, aqua, fluorescent pink and black). Nina advised us on the correct order to print the colours, as some of them are more opaque and others more transparent. Fun fact: Nina’s printer ran entirely on solar energy during the sunny week that she spent printing it!&#38;nbsp;
The interior pages are printed on Fedrigoni Freelife Cento Rough (100% recycled – certifications: FSC® 100% Recycled – features: acid free, heavy metal absence, select secondary fibres, biodegradable and recyclable) in four sections, according to the four seasons, with four different RISO inks each. This gives a specific look to each chapter.
The cover is printed on Fedrigoni Materica Acqua (certifications: FSC® Mix – features: cotton content, elemental chlorine free, acid free, select secondary fibres, heavy metal absence) made with 25% recycled fibres, 65% virgin fibres and 10% cotton fibres. 
The limited run of books was bound by Gazelle.

	THE CONTENT MAKES THE DESIGN

One of the things we love about book design is that we are exposed to a new subject matter with each project we work on. We have made books about art, plants, food, fashion, architecture, Shakespeare, travelling, bees, hiking, forest cabins, meditation, nuns, interior design, politics, health…
We believe that content is the beating heart of book design, forming the basis for our choices in the creative process: from the page flow and the use of type and colour, to the book size, materials and binding method. We aim to understand the nuances of the content to create a balance between form and functionality, between design and readability. A book should be an experience for the reader, so we hope to leave a lasting impression.
With attention to detail, we organize the flow of a book through a process of curation and editing. There should be an interplay of rhythm and structure that provides both clarity and a captivating yet natural reading experience. 
The physical aspects of a publication – size, materials and binding – are more often than not informed by the content. We carefully choose dimensions that optimize content presentation, striking a balance between legibility and aesthetic appeal. Every book deserves a size that showcases its unique qualities and draws readers in. Materials are carefully curated to enhance the tactile experience and create a sensory connection with the content. We explore a wide range of weights, textures, and finishes to find the perfect match that complements the essence of the book (and the available budget). Binding is the glue that brings it all together. We select binding methods that align with the content, whether it’s a sturdy hardcover that exudes elegance and lies completely flat, or a flexible paperback that invites readers to curl up and delve into the story.
In this case study we give some examples of work where there is a clear link between the content and the design.

POINT BREAK–SURFERS AND WAVES is a coffee-table art book about American artist Raymond Pettibon. In 1985, Pettibon began his series of artworks featuring surfers and waves: from smaller monochromatic works on paper to colourful large-scale paintings applied directly to the wall, often depicting a lone surfer silently carving ‘a line of beauty’ along an impossibly large wave. We are forced to confront our own scale: small and feeble in the face of the power of nature, what is beyond our control. 
This is why we chose a large format for the book: 305×229 mm. It’s a weighty object that compels you to take the time to sit down, open it up on your lap, and flip through the large pages admiring the artworks and imagining them at the size of your living room wall. 
Bigger and smaller artworks alternate in a natural page flow. For the large titles, we chose an elegant font with details reminiscent of the waves. Main essay texts are clearly distinguished from the ‘testimonials’ by a different type and size treatment. The end papers feature close-up details from two artworks portraying the lone surfer experiencing the waves’ turbulence.


	ABSTRACT VAUDEVILLE is the comprehensive monograph documenting the 40-year career of British performance artist Rose English. Her uniquely interdisciplinary work combines elements of theatre, circus, opera and poetry to explore themes of gender politics, the identity of the performer and the metaphysics of presence.
This was Sarah’s first project as an independent book designer, and she was approached by the book’s editor to tackle the challenge of intertwining the extensive essay with the many hundreds of archival photographs, research documents, behind the scenes shots, scripts and interviews, as well as lead the production management.
Each essay chapter is dotted with Rose’s research documents and gradually moves to pre-performance costume fittings, promotional photographs, etc. to end with the official photography from the performance(s) mentioned in the chapter. The included performance scripts are set in a different typeface and on pages that are cut shorter than the book block, like a ‘book in a book’. 
Curating the massive 40-year archive of often analogue imagery was challenging, but it was all the more rewarding seeing the puzzle pieces come together. It was a great collaboration with the artist, but it also gave a sense of authorship over the project because she was given so much creative freedom and trust.

	WHEN A BOOK BECOMES AN OBJECT

‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’. But – in the literal sense of the proverb – we all do, right? As book designers, we also judge a book by its physicality, its tactility, its ‘objectness’. The size, weight, binding, paper, typography, printing, even barcode placement. Sometimes we buy a book just because we love it so much as an object. When we seek inspiration for a new project, we will take it off the shelf and admire it all over again.
We design books with all those factors in mind. What cover and cover material best suits the subject and content? What do you experience when you pick it up: is it light or heavy? Can we add details that elevate the design or that convey an abstract idea?
In this case study, we highlight a few books that we designed and are proud of as objects in themselves.

WANDERSPACE/ZWERFRUIMTE is a brick-sized book by Belgian architecture firm RE-ST. For their 10-year anniversary, they compiled this manifesto as a reflection of their ‘not-building’ practice. The form of the book refers to a 1979 artwork by Belgian artist/architect Luc Deleu called The last stone of Belgium, protesting against the unnecessary building culture. This book wants to be the last ‘brick’ laid down in Belgium, before every last bit of open space is developed into apartments or offices.
Our challenge was to design and produce the concept that RE-ST had in mind. We knew that we wanted it to be the size of a common terracotta brick: 11cm wide and 21cm high. The thickness ideally was around 4–5cm. We requested multiple quotes and received a couple of dummies. The idea of an open spine book in three sections, by Brepols, was our absolute favourite, but due to budget reasons the publisher decided to go with a more standard hardcover with a thickness of 3,5cm. To provide some contrast with the format, we chose bulky paper to create a counterintuitive light book rather than a heavy one.
The 2mm hardcover board is cut flush and has edge printing in the same rusty PMS that is used to print the cover. A second, blue-gray PMS is added for the typographic layer and there are three circles blind embossed into the front and back cover, a clear nod to the design of a particular brick. The blue-gray is also used as the only colour for the interior, apart from the 48-page full-colour image section in the middle.


	TEAM RESEARCH BY DESIGN is a new publication by the Bouwmeester Maître Architecte, the chief government architect of the city of Brussels. It explains the concept of ‘research by design’: a method to provide arguments early on in the political decision-making process about what a city will look like and what level of quality is desired. This is done through the medium of drawing; not to be executed as such, but to feed the conversation about the spatial qualities and possibilities, and hopefully also to influence the final decisions made. 
The bilingual publication is produced as a ‘tête-bêche’: Dutch on one side and French on the other side.
For the cover material we chose Napura Khepera, a thermo-reactive paper with lovely speckles and fibres. One layer of the typographic title treatment is blind embossed, which means it is impressed without the use of inks or foils. The darker blue colour is achieved because of the paper’s reaction to the heat from the embossing. The other layer of the typography is screenprinted in a light grey Pantone colour. The 2mm hardcover is cut flush, exposing the greyboard.
Grey is also used in the interior of the book to separate the content into parts: the front and end matter are set on white backgrounds, but the projects – located in the centre of each side – are set on a light grey background. This makes the project section stand out. The interior paper is a beautiful Munken Lynx Rough, a pleasure to touch.

	DE KOOI&#38;nbsp;is the self-published novella by Tineke Aertsen. Its look takes inspiration from a Bur-O-Class Aurora notebook: the same dimensions, a natural grey-ish linen cover with foil printing. But we changed some details to make it more fitting for a work of fiction: bulky paper, printed endpapers, thicker board for the cover. Unfortunately we weren’t able to do the signature red edge printing because of budget restrictions.


In certain chapters of this fictional story (which is based on true facts), fragments from a diary are shown next to the prose. This is because the main character, Anna, writes in a Bur-O-Class notebook during an important trip.&#38;nbsp;As the reader, it’s confusing and you must choose whether you want to read them simultaneously or in separate readings. It makes you reflect on the difference between reality and fiction.&#38;nbsp;
The hotfoil printing on the cover is in anthracite, not black: this brings some softness to the overall look. For the cover material we picked Wicotex Naturlinen, this is a near exact match to the notebook’s linen. For the interior, printed in offset black, we chose Fedrigoni Arena Bulk Natural. The book was produced in a small batch of 200 copies.

	HILMA AF KLINT AND WASSILY KANDINSKY: DREAMS OF THE FUTURE
While there is no indication that the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint and the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky ever met, this publication presents a dynamic and visual conversation between them.The book was originally published in German for the eponymous exhibition at&#38;nbsp;Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf, but has now been completely reimagined in an English translation and new design.
We designed a matching dust jacket and hardcover, both on a beautiful and tactile, blush pink Materica paper and finished with orange foil stamping.To make a clear visual distinction between the works of both artists, af Klint’s are always set from top to bottom with the captions at the bottom, and Kandinsky’s from bottom to top with the captions on the top.

	CLOSER TO VERMEER


We recently assisted Irma Boom Office with the design and typesetting of Closer to Vermeer, the more in-depth successor of the bestselling Vermeer book, which was published for the 2023 exhibition at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. The design of this second volume is based on IBO’s design for the first book, but with new layout concepts for the extensive art historical and technical research into the work and process of the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.&#38;nbsp;With essays by over 40 leading international experts and touching on topics such as perspective, patrons, maps, porcelain, weaves and techniques,&#38;nbsp;Closer to Vermeer offers invaluable insight into the world of Vermeer.

	LOIS DODD—FRAMING THE EPHEMERAL


Published on the occasion of Lois Dodd’s first European museum exhibition at Kunstmuseum Den Haag (30 August 2025 – 6 January 2026), this catalogue presents the American painter’s quietly radical body of work. 

Dodd’s paintings are almost always made in a single sitting, outdoors, depicting everyday subjects such as trees, clotheslines, modest outbuildings, summer gardens, and views through windows. She frequently revisits the same motifs at different times of year, allowing light, season, and atmosphere to transform the familiar into something new. 	VINTAGE MOTELS

A nostalgic road trip through 40 mid-century motels in the USA, this book celebrates the unique blend of vintage charm and modern comfort found in these roadside landmarks. Each motel, originally built in the golden age of the 1950s and 60s, is&#38;nbsp;presented with&#38;nbsp;engaging storytelling and a carefully curated mix of archival imagery and contemporary photography. 

We worked to ensure the book’s physical form echoed its subject matter. The hardcover is wrapped in Wibalin Natural, chosen for its subtle texture and warm colour, and finished with a baby blue foil to recall neon motel signage. 

The cover photograph is inset as an embossed tip-in, giving the book a tactile focal point reminiscent of a postcard collected on a road trip.

	In the interior of the book, the layout pairs the generous image selection with carefully structured text, creating a rhythm that mirrors the journey from one motel to the next.

The overall design was guided by a desire to evoke mid-century charm while presenting the content in a clean, contemporary way, ensuring the book feels both timeless and inviting to readers.

This comprehensive and unique in-depth guide maps the rich field of Belgian interior design between 1945 and 2000. It’s not only an indispensable tool for students and researchers, but also an urgent call for the preservation of valuable archives. 

Written and edited by doctoral researchers of the University of Antwerp and KU Leuven, together with publisher VAi, the book explores the sources that are essential to understand the evolution of interior design as an independent discipline in Belgium, offering the first in-depth insight into the field, focusing on the role of education, professional organisations and designers.&#38;nbsp;It also zooms in on the internationally renowned Biennale Interieur and unique stories of less visible designers.

In this particular case, our book design prioritises legibility and usability. It’s a very text-rich publication, so a clear type hierarchy with header navigation, lemma highlights and various column widths were key elements. There is an extensive table of contents in the front, with handy thumb cuts for each major chapter in the book – making it easy to navigate.

We chose for a hardcover finish with Swiss binding and an open spine, to ensure that the book lays completely flat. An important feature when using a resource guide as a researcher: you want it to stay open on the page that you are reading while also writing something down.

Aside from the black-and-white text pages, there is also a colour section on a coated paper with beautiful visual references from various archives.The tall format, tactile materials and stand-out thumb cuts make the Bronnengids a book about design as well as a design object itself.

In Liever lui dan moe: Zoeken naar verveling in een wereld vol afleiding (Rather Lazy Than Tired: Searching for Boredom in a World Full of Distractions), film curator and essayist Johannes De Breuker explores how we can reclaim our attention by embracing precisely what the digital world took from us: boredom. 
Through filmmakers such as Sofia Coppola, Richard Linklater and Kogonada, he discovers that cinema offers not only entertainment but also a rare opportunity to pause. To truly look, think, and feel.
With sharp observations, personal reflections, and a touch of irony, De Breuker argues for boredom as both an act of resistance and a form of relaxation. Maybe we don’t need to become more productive. Maybe it’s just time to let ourselves be bored.&#38;nbsp;

	For the design of the cover and interior, we were inspired by the tic-tac-toe (OXO) game that plays a small part in the beautiful Wim Wenders film Perfect Days. The drawing of the game evolves as you read through the book.
This is the third book that we are publishing ourselves, with our indie publishing house flaneur uitgevers!
