BELGISCHE CINEMA IN 24 FRAMES

This is the first book published by our own publishing side project: flaneur uitgevers!

Belgische cinema in 24 frames
is the first in a new book series called 24 frames, celebrating film by looking at its core: the humble film still. One second of fluid movement is made up of 24 frames. That’s why each title in the series will playfully survey a genre, career or movement on the basis of 24 film stills and 24 accompanying short literary essays by various authors.

The first book is a collection of 24 remarkable Belgian movies, with a deliberate mix of old and new, unknown and classic, and from the different regions in Belgium (Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia).

As both designers and publishers, we started thinking about the design and form of the book series early on in the process. Aside from being a budget-friendly choice, the tall format (99×210mm) is also a reference to widescreen cinema. To accommodate for the landscape images, we applied two reading directions: the essays are presented horizontally, while the additional information is presented vertically. To facilitate reading comfort, we opted for a Swiss binding with open spine – and a coloured thread as a fun detail.
