CLOSER TO VERMEER
We recently assisted Irma Boom Office with the design and typesetting of Closer to Vermeer, the more in-depth successor of the bestselling Vermeer book, which was published for the 2023 exhibition at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
The design of this second volume is based on IBO’s design for the first book, but with new layout concepts for the extensive art historical and technical research into the work and process of the famous Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer.
With essays by over 40 leading international experts and touching on topics such as perspective, patrons, maps, porcelain, weaves and techniques, Closer to Vermeer offers invaluable insight into the world of Vermeer.

“How did Vermeer translate his creative ideas into paint? Did the 17th-century Dutch master truly rely on optical devices? What do the carefully rendered objects in his interiors reveal about the artist himself? And how has the perception of his small but extraordinary oeuvre evolved over time? Using the latest imaging techniques, researchers scrutinize Vermeer’s masterpieces, yielding compelling new insights into his artistic process, material choices, and technical virtuosity.”
