DE CHOCOLADEFABRIEK REVISITED

De Chocoladefabriek is an old factory building that a2o architects repurposed into a residential community, demonstrating a remarkable sensitivity to heritage. A central brick volume featuring a colorful Art Nouveau stained-glass window is flanked by two identical factory wings, while the tower and workshop on the western side break the symmetry of the complex.

Five years after completion, the architects revisit the project to explore how the building is used and experienced. The book documents this retrospective through texts and various visual essays – covering temporary uses, stunning photographs by Stijn Bollaert from both the construction phase and the present day, as well as architectural plans and drawings.

We opted for a compact yet tall, narrow format, resulting in a beautiful, readable hardcover volume. The fresh green hue of the tactile linen binding echoes the colors of the distinctive stained-glass window, while a tipped-in photograph adds a touch of distinction.
