MODELS FROM THE PAST FOR THE FUTURE

How can a design collection continue to inspire us today? This question forms the starting point for Models from the Past for the Future, the new collection presentation at Design Museum Gent. Following a 4.5-year renovation, the museum reopened with almost 500 objects arranged around five themes: Copy, Comfort, Migration, Folding and Connections.

To coincide with the reopening, the museum commissioned two publications to support the exhibition: a collection book featuring selected highlights, and a larger volume that brings together in-depth research and essays.

From the outset, we proposed two publications that are distinct yet complementary: a compact illustrated softcover and a larger, type-led hardcover. Both use the same materials, including recycled papers such as Muskat and Nautilus, but apply them in different ways to create two contrasting reading experiences. The material choices are inspired by the exhibition’s scenography (clay plaster and light blue wall paint).

The books can be purchased separately or as a set. Rather than a conventional slipcase, we chose a bright yellow rubber band to hold them together, turning the two publications into a single design object in its own right.

Published in two language editions: Dutch & English.

The exhibition Models from the Past for the Future runs as a permanent collection at Design Museum Gent from 17.10.2026 until 31.12.2029.
