MONSTERLIJK MOEDERSCHAP

Mothers are monstrous. At least, that’s what we are made to believe when we watch film and art, and read literature. From classics like Psycho and Carrie to the paintings of Alice Neel and the personal reflections of Joan Didion and Chantal Akerman: mothers appear everywhere as suffocating or absent, manipulative or downright terrifying.

Based on her own viewing history and inspired by feminist thinkers, journalist Jozefien Van Beek interweaves autobiography with analysis. She starts with her own childhood and eventually has a child of her own. Could it be that it’s not mothers who are monstrous, but motherhood itself?

Monsterlijk moederschap is a sharp, personal, and profound book about the expectations, fears, and paradoxes of motherhood. With a personal, literary style, Van Beek places her story within a broader social and cultural context.

This book is the second one that we are publishing ourselves, with our indie publishing house flaneur uitgevers!
